Here's where the nation's major religions and religious denominations stand on gay marriage:
American Baptist: Maintains that homosexuality "is incompatible with Christian teaching."
Buddhism: No official position.
Catholicism: Opposes gay marriage.
Episcopal: No explicit endorsement, but opposes any constitutional amendments prohibiting same-sex marriages or unions.
Evangelical Lutheran: Defines marriage as a union between a woman and a man.
Hinduism: No official position. Attitudes toward gays vary.
Islam: Homosexuality is considered a violation of Islamic law.
Judaism: Reform and Reconstructionists support same-sex marriage. Conservatives let rabbis decide whether to perform same-sex marriages. Orthodox leaders oppose them.
Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod: Terms gay marriage "contrary to the will of the Creator."

I can only speak from what I have learned from talking to people.

American Baptist Churches "official" position is that it's incompatible with Christian teaching but that's not what I saw as a member of a search committee in practice.

The local pastor's wife of Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod said when asked what their denomination believes: "The Bible says 'don't.'"
