In The Grip of Grace
by Max Lucado
c. 1996
Max Lucado takes the book of Romans and goes almost verse by verse showing the grace of God. He starts with a parable of five brothers. Four are swept down the river they were warned away from. Of those four, one decides to become part of the world he is swept into, one decides to keep track of the wrongs of his brother, one decides to build a rock pathway back home and the fourth waits for his father to rescue him. One day, the oldest brother shows up to carry them back home. The first refuses to go, the second brings out a list of the wrongs of the first, the third maintains that he is working his way back. Only the fourth is willing to go with the oldest brother.
In light of this parable, and others, we find God’s grace waiting for us in this book and the book of Romans along with others. We look at God’s anger and what it means in terms of grace. We also look at the Godless living we (and the three parable brothers) exhibit. We hear God calling our dead souls to life, find the point at which God’s love and justice meet, and find credit in our grace account that we not only didn’t earn but were incapable of earning.
Complete with study guide in the back. Would be a great book for a Bible study or just a great read-along with the book of Romans. Lots of humor, easy to understand language, and timelessness in terms of age of the reader or the year we’re living in.
