The Case For Christ: A Journalist’s Personal Investigation of the Evidence for Jesus
by Lee Strobel
c. 1998
Lee Strobel was a journalist and an atheist with a problem–his wife became a Christian. He was concerned with what that would mean both for his marriage and for his children. So, as an investigative reporter, he went on a quest for the truth which he presupposed was that Jesus was a fictional character whose story had survived 2,000 years but wasn’t really who His believers thought He was.
And since Strobel had experience as an investigative journalist reporting on court cases, he looked at the New Testament and Jesus through the lens of a criminal court case. He went looking for eyewitnesses both in and out of the Bible. He looked for cooroborating evidence, fingerprint evidence, documentary evidence and others. He looked at Jesus through the eyes of a Jewish theologian. He questioned Jesus’ sanity. He questioned the apostles and the historians and everyone else he could find.
Finally, after almost 2 years, he sat down with a legal pad and tallied up the evidence he had. And then he decided that it would take more faith to continue being an atheist than it would to pray the sinners prayer and believe that Jesus was the Son of God. And then he accepted John 1:12 as his verse and gave his life over to Jesus Christ believing He was exactly who He said He was.
This is a well-written, easy to read account of what the evidence is that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of God. For any who doubt or who have heard all the arguments as to why the Bible is tainted and Jesus is a fabrication, this is the book to refute all the arguments. Another book everyone should read.
