Has Gustov Taken the Wind out of the GOP's Sails?

Postby chip on Tue Sep 02, 2008 4:36 pm

Wondering if the recent hurricane has rained on the Republican Convention's parade.

Also, Sarah Palin's daughter is pregnant. It reminded me of when it was discovered Dick Cheney’s daughter was gay. John Edwards looked like a bully when he tried to push Cheney’s buttons about her during a sit-down debate. I respected how Obama told his attack dogs to lay of SP’s family and kids. That got a point with me. Not sure the NY Times will get BO’s message. Personally, the child keeping the baby is more endearing to me. For pro-choice people these days, it's a good thing; the casual "alternative" pains us more.

I'm curious about some of you traditional types and moderates: how does SP's unwed pregnant teen affect your view of SP?

There's a debate going on about this now on another forum. Some there take the daughter's pregnancy as a sign either of Palin's lack of parenting skills or time for her children. They lean to the latter I think. They say Palin's not a bad parent as much as she just doesn't wear the "mom" hat enough. The other side is happy to see a politician stand up for life in such bold ways, especially one headed for one of the top two positions in the country. I fall into the last camp. I don't blame the parents for the children's behavior unless I have evidence they don't care to teach the kids.

While I am concerned about the impact this new, high pressure job will have on her family, especially Trig, I am happy to have a woman running for office with whom I can agree. Albert Mohler wrote his blog on this today. Do you suppose the Vice Presidency pays enough that the father could stay home for a few years to mind the kids?

As far as the hurricane is concerned, I think it looks good to reschedule the convention to at least appear to try and help. In the world, perception is 90% of reality. The more jaded and cynical among us will see it as solely a campaign tactic, and one designed to limit George W's involvement at that. I think there is at least some genuine desire to help behind it. Far from taking the wind out of the GOP's sails, to me their response has given them a boost. Instead of meeting, saying something needs to be done, and deriding their opponent's imagined response, they actually took steps to free up people and resources to help--at least a little bit. I wonder what would happen if McCain donated a significant chunk of his campaign funds to the relief effort. Would that help or hinder his chances of beating Obama? Less money for ads, but really great free publicity in the news . . .

I think Gustav took more wind out of the sails of the Dems than the GOP. By delaying and shortening and McCain going for a look, it made him look more presidental, in my opinion.

Palin took the bull by the horns and took the wind out of the rumor mill about her daughter. That takes spunk. I like it. I also like all the pro-life choices the family is making. They put their money where their mouths are. I'm also part of that discussion Jon mentioned in his post. I'm on the side we need leaders with her beliefs. I believe that family can hold together and come through this just fine. I've been reading presidential bios to my sons for about a year now and she's not the first candidate for one of the top spots to raise kids while serving this country. The others have come through it with great relationships with their children. I have no doubt she will do the same.

As for Jon's remark about the campaign funds--I think it's a great idea. However, I'm afraid the media is so canted to the left that it would only be mentioned once in passing and then passed over thereby generating him nothing in the free news market. It's a thought though.

Dittos to Ehart on all counts. Abraham Lincoln spent a great deal of time being an excellent father while in the White House. It's doable for someone so inclined. And while the attacks from the left have lost their steam because of Palin's openness and the response to the hurricane, I still worry that Obama has a commanding lead in the polls. What the republicrats need is a real bump from their convention.
I watched some of Paul's convention last night. He has a huge crowd, maybe even rivaling the GOP. And his material was excellent as well. Sigh.
Still planning to vote for Barr...

I am amazed to how much the Left hates this woman. She brings the worst out of them. What makes them hate her so?

Someone has called her the new Clarence Thomas, that she is getting Anita Hilled. I have also heard on the news last night that Sarah Palin’s scrutiny is worse than an IRS audit and a cavity search combined; only thing is, this is not a cavity search but a uterus search! Feminism is not really concerned about woman per se but liberalism. They didn’t stand up to Bill Clinton as he was demeaning woman with his roles, and they will vilify this woman even though she has the best shot ever to get a woman behind the desk. It is all about abortion for them—not a courageous working woman standing up for her convictions and cleaning up the good ole boy network.

About last night’s convention: Oh goodness; the two most boring people in the world opening things up! Fred Thompson and Joe Lieberman have both put me to sleep more than once. They did ok though (phew). Fred spoke highly of SP. His great line was “SP will be the only one in the white house who ever knew how to field dress a moose—beside Teddy Roosevelt” (Art can tell you what that means). Lieberman basically said we are in perilous times; you have to put the country first and vote for the right man. That’s not nothing coming from a man on the opposite ticket in 2000.

This Palin thing is getting uglier than I thought it would. They are digging through her garbage looking for receipts. She is so hated by the political and religious left, I wonder if she can take it. If she does, their hatred for her may surpass Reagan and parallel with theirs for Jerry Fallwel. I liked her at first but their hatred for her makes me like her more. All this kicking up of dust may make everyone watch her tonight. This may endear her more to average Joe’s and Josephine’s if she delivers.
