--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My older daughter was married last November. Her mother-in-law, Janet Hooley, was admitted to the hospital in NC during a visit to her daughter and grandchildren.

Janet has battled colon cancer for several years now. It had metastasized to the liver, abdomen, and lungs. We were not sure if she would even make it to the wedding last fall. But, praise the Lord, thanks to God's grace working through effective chemo, she was happily present at the wedding (albeit with a scarf over her now bald head). Janet was able to attend her youngest son's wedding this summer as well.

During her visit to NC, she suffered shortness of breath and a dangerously low oxygen level in her blood. They admitted her for pneumonia, found that she has almost no white cells left, and have been unable to bring her "pulse ox" levels up. Now she is in intensive care and her husband called the kids in the middle of the night and said "you better come quick."

Janet is a prayer warrior and a relatively young woman (late 50s). Her sons have been missionaries and are married to women who have been missionaries, her daughter is also a strong believer with three little kids.

Pray for Janet and her husband Byron, for Benji and his wife Abby (Janet's daughter) and their three kids, for Cory and his wife (my daughter) Sarah, and for Derek (Janet's son) and his wife Angi. May the Lord be merciful to them all. We are still praying for a miracle.

Latest update on Janet: They still don't know exactly what is wrong with her. Most of the tests they would normally use are tioo intrusive given here condition. She has been responding to the broad spectrum antiobiotics. So, they figure that it really doesn't matter what the causality might be. With oxygen, she still has an O2 sat in the low 80s. But, with oxygen, she has been able to do pretty well.

So, bottom line: her husband told me that he did not expect her to make it through the night a couple of days ago. No she has been moved out of intensive care into intermediate care. Praise the Lord!!!

Today Janet began chemo again. This is the one that she had four years ago and which left her reeling. The docs say that the cancer has stablilized in her lungs but has gone from 1/4 of her liver to 3/4 of it. They give this one a 5% - 10% chance of doing her any good. The family is strong in the Lord but struggling with how to respond at this point.

Janet's chemo is producing the same disagreeable side effects that it did five years ago when she was on the same drugs. Additionally, her liver cancer (now involving 3/4 of her liver) has made it difficult for her to eat anything but the blandest of foods even before beginning chemo. The lung cancer (she never smoked; it is metastatic colon cancer) seems to be remaining about the same. She is discouraged but praising the Lord for his grace in the midst of her trial. My daughter and her husband (Janet's son) just celebrated their first anniversary last week. The family is observing Christmas this Thanksgiving when the children and spouses will all gather in Fort Wayne. It will also be my daughter's 26th birthday that day.

The docs say that the probability of any kind of therapeutic benefit from this round of chemo, slated to run through December, is 5%-10%. If she were not in her 50s, she would probably not have bothered with this round.

Sometimes it is hard to believe in the face of discouraging prognosis.
But I will believe for Janet's deliverance just the same. God is so much bigger than the devourer. Just recently we had a local pastor with inoperable brain cancer who has be inexplicably completely healed. God is the only explanation any one has left. It's a shame to use that as explanation of last resort, but even there, Jesus is still lifted up. May He be lifted up in Janet's life as well!

Since writing my original post, Janet Hooley has rallied, failed, rallied again, and now . . .

This afternoon, I received a phone call and this e-mail from my son-in-law . . .

2 Cor. 4:16-18
Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

This afternoon at 3:15 Momma Hooley left her earthly body here and went home to be in her Savior's arms for eternity. Her passing was a beautiful thing and you could hear the angels rejoicing. We are sad to not have mom with us here on earth but are so grateful that she is no longer in pain and and is in her Home that she so longed for.

We appreciate your prayers and words of encouragement in the days to come.

All three of Janet's children were at her bedside. They had been planning her memorial service when her breathing "changed." Led by her pastor, the children and her husband, Byron, sang hymns and prayed. They were there in worship when Janet took her last breath. For a 50-something year old, her death seemed too early. However, she loved the Lord and instructed the pastor to "preach the Gospel" at her service.

Please pray for the Hooley family at this time of loss.

[My wife and I will be flying to the midwest this next week for the service. We have all four of our married children in the midwest (one unmarried one in high school at home) and are hoping that our fourth grandson will be born while we are in the area.]
