Prayer Through The Eyes Of Women Of The Bible
by Ann Spangler & Jean E. Syswerda
c. 2000
This is a neat little book that covers 25 women of the Bible and how prayer affected their lives. It gives their names (or the Biblical description of them such as Proverbs 31 Woman) and the meaning of their name or a less than 10 word description of her. It then quotes scriptures that tell her story in a brief but concise manner followed by her character, her sorrow and, most of the time, her joy. We then have a two-page devotion on her life and life choices followed by tie-in scriptures, reflections for prayer in our own lives and, finally, a prayer for us.
This is a good book but written mainly for women. I used it as a devotional in the mornings but a friend of mine had used it previously as a teaching tool in a women’s group.
The authors have done a wonderful job of looking at the women in the Bible and finding something in their lives that can be adapted to our lives as a way to draw us closer to God. Even Potipher’s Wife and the Queen of Sheba have something to offer modern women in terms of insights into prayer and drawing closer to God.
